My Almost Finished Build
#1
First...I AM A MOSQUITO / UPTIGROVE FAN!
A couple of years ago, I found a new-in-the-crate, untouched, Mini-500 kit, on Ebay for $5ooo. That lit a fire under my butt to lose 80 pounds and build it, since I had a good experience flying one for 100 hours in 1997.

I'm almost done and as I assembled this new helicopter, I made all the updates and a couple that were not even done back then to hopefully make it a more enjoyable/reliable machine.

The biggest changes I made were tapered Timkens on the pinion input shaft and an Archimedes Screw oil pump as the pinion bearing spacer to supply oil to the upper main mast bearing. I also had the main mast diameter hard chromed in the bearing areas to 0.001" oversize to stop the "inner race spinning" problem that happened back then. I also put Redi-Sleeves on the main mast where the 2 oil seals ride to avoid a groove being made. Almost every other detail is done by the stock Mini-500 factory stuff, as supplied in the late serial number kits. I also bought a "parts helicopter" complete Mini-500 for $4000 which had the "late-model" update parts that my new low serial # kit didn't. I sold the bits from it that I didn't need for $4000 to break even in the NET.

Ready to fly, with no radios, my goal was UNDER $10,000. If it was not for PPG Concept paint, I would have met my goal.

Here's how it's coming out. I have about 2 weeks left.
